Moldova Restaurant is a excellent ambassador for the unassuming nation just northeast of Romania.

New York's only Moldovan establishment is designed to appeal to the city's Moldovan population and curious newcomers. The main dining room has a mix of large tables for the banquet-style dining common in this part of the world and four-tops designed for American-sized families.

Our party of 13 arrived sans reservation in the middle of the afternoon and immediately and graciously ushered to back room, a unique space where plants and green Christmas lights have been arranged in some sort of Slavic take on Fern Gully.

We were on a Gravesend food tour, so we sampled a half-dozen appetizers. The fasolita is a bean paste not dissimilar to white bean dip that pairs well with the provided dark bread. Ursuleti (described as a house special) are corn meal balls fried with a soft cheese inside and crumbled on top.

Several members of our well-traveled party noted the similarities to the food of northern Croatia, especially in the generous use of farmer's cheese in the placinte - a filled pastry - and the coltunasi - a Moldovan take on pelmeni.

The food was hearty without being heavy, arrived quickly and with a smile.

For those planning a trip out here, I'd highly recommend Moldova Restaurant's website, which has pictures and descriptions of the entire menu in English, with far more information than the standard New American site. A great experience.

Ordered from Moldova (via GrubHub) when we were looking for something new. It seemed like a gamble because the few reviews we could find were varied; we really weren’t sure what to expect. But no need to worry — the food was awesome and delivery was fast. The homemade fruit punch was delightfully anti-Hi-C, the salata taranesc so simple yet so fresh and really well made; the carnaciori (kielbasa) perfectly seasoned and juicy; the snitzel, triumphant. It feels a bit strange to give it five stars; it’s not like it’s Daniel or something. But as far as a takeout experience goes, this was the absolute best we’ve had in a long, long time. Everything was fantastic (and reasonably priced), and we’ll definitely be repeat customers.

If i could i would give it 10 stars!! The best food u can find in all new york!! Loved it, will deff go there again:)

AMAZING! … So fresh … Great portions … Very flavorful …. Absolutely delicious!

My new favorite restaurant. Stuffed grape leaves remind me of my grandmothers. Fried potatoes with mushrooms so good too.

Salutari din Norvegia:)

Translation from Romanian:

Today I was at Moldova Restaurant, I liked the ambiance and the food as well, of course I tasted the cheese pastries, herring, I had my schnitzel and my boyfriend had a very delicious pork chop, very good food! It was our first visit and we will come again! What could be better than Moldovan dishes …

Bravo voua !!!

Translation from Romanian:

I’m so happy that you could do it, far away from home, to open this place for the common good of our fellow citizens but also to gather those who are away from home, because how Andrei said Moldovans are not united neither in Italy or in Moldova. Good work!
